I spent the first three years of my 24-year career melting the soles of my steel toe boots trying to outwork my colleagues in the plants . . .

For example, during an FCCU CO Boiler outage at Sunoco’s Philadelphia plant (several years before I hired on as an area inspector with them), instead of saying I found a large crack on the serration of the steam drum’s tube ID 27R, I designed a model of the tubesheet and mapped out a crack using Excel's 3D shape tools . . . in October 2002!!!

That was truly next level stuff no one had really seen in our niche of the refining industry that early on, and I understood the magical impact it had on the project managers right away: “Oh, wow.” “Who did this?” “How in the world did you do that?”

Needless to say, by just doing that I had already made a name for myself and remained on the project all the way through startup. I’ve capitalized on similar visual aesthetics time and time again throughout my career with great success.

But I’ve also capitalized on a dozen or so other strategic areas of my work life as well, and each of these are all things anyone can do. Such as becoming obscenely knowledgeable in just one thing which no one else in your group is fluent in.
